Who We Are
Our History
The United Church of Christ of Fredericksburg has been rooted in this community since 2000 — growing from a small gathering of faithful people into the congregation we are today. This is our story.
October 1, 2000
Founded as Fredericksburg Congregational Church
Two UCC pastors, Reverend Cathie Fisher Brahman and Reverend Stephen Miller, had moved to Fredericksburg and recognized the city as the right place to plant a United Church of Christ. The congregation held its first service at the Campus Christian Center at the University of Mary Washington, with Rev. Cathie Fisher Brahman serving as the founding pastor.
Early Years
A Coffee Shop Ministry at Ticker’s Coffee
As the church grew, the congregation moved to an unconventional but welcoming home: Ticker’s Coffee. The ministry flourished there until a national coffee chain moved into the same shopping center, forcing Ticker’s to close — and the congregation to relocate once more.
In Between
A Season of Moving
The months that followed found the congregation gathering in a yoga studio while searching for a permanent home. It was a season that tested and strengthened the community’s commitment to one another.
2005
A Permanent Home — and a New Pastor
The congregation found its current home in the Baker Room of the Fredericksburg Masonic Lodge on Hanover Street in downtown Fredericksburg. That same year, Reverend Douglas Norwood Hodges joined as pastor, beginning a faithful tenure that would last nearly two decades.
February 2023
Rev. Darryl! LC Moch Called as Pastor
Upon the retirement of Rev. Hodges, the congregation called Reverend Darryl! LC Moch to lead. He continues to shepherd the congregation with enthusiasm and a deep zeal for delivering the message of love, acceptance, and living as Christ calls us to live.
What We Stand On
Our Core Values
Discipleship in Jesus Christ
We follow the teachings of Jesus Christ as the center and compass of our communal life.
Scripture
We study God’s saving acts in history and remain open to how God continues to speak to us through scripture.
Personal Faith
We respect the sanctity of each individual’s personal relationship with God — no two journeys look exactly alike.
Inclusiveness
All are welcome. No exceptions. We mean it.
Community of Faith
We provide Christian service and assistance to those in need, living the gospel as much as preaching it.
Social Justice
We advocate for equality for all people, believing justice is an act of worship.
Grace
We recognize our need for God’s forgiveness, mercy, and guidance — and extend that same grace to one another.
